The roots of my advocacy
My uncle Quaid was my mother's older brother and her best friend. He moved through the world as a gay man, with a tangible vibrance that I will always remember. One of my earliest memories of him was solving the problem of not having a bathing suit by jumping into the pool in his tighty whities.
In 1992, at the age of 42, Quaid died of AIDS complications in New York City. My mother's heart was broken, and our family still grieves him. In the years after, we participated in the AIDS Walk in Washington, DC, and I still remember moving amongst the masses, curiously watching advocacy in action and the unapologetic celebration of the queer community.
My commitment to the LGBTQ+ community is personal. It's my uncle Quaid.
Health education as an act of justice.
Seven years, seventh graders, and yes - sex ed. I spent seven years teaching science and health in the Los Angeles Unified School District, and it was some of the most meaningful work I have ever done. In the few weeks each year I taught sex ed, I came to understand the power of being the trusted adult who tells a room of twelve- and thirteen-year-olds: your body is yours, you deserve accurate information, and no question is a bad question.
My science background means I can talk about hormones, cycles, and reproductive physiology with you. You deserve a coach who understands what's happening in your body, not just how it feels.
Beyond the classroom — and into the system.
After eight total years and more than twelve hundred seventh-graders, I moved into systems-level work across Los Angeles public schools. I led and supported teams working alongside first- and second-year teachers in LA's most under-resourced schools — logging countless hours of instructional and leadership coaching.
I had the privilege of partnering with so many beautiful humans from diverse backgrounds who were showing up every day for our kids and communities. I learned how institutions move (and resist moving), how to build trust across lines of difference, and how to coach someone toward clarity when the system around them is anything but clear.
What I carry.
What you're seeing is two weeks post-hysterectomy. Since 2007, my body has been my most demanding teacher. Chronic pelvic pain has brought me into closer relationship with what it means to inhabit a body that requires extra attention. It has been nineteen years, and I am still very much on this journey.
I have moved through Premature Ovarian Insufficiency, infertility, and hormone replacement therapy, among other things. I had a full hysterectomy at the end of April, 2026.
Yarrow Root Coaching LLC became an official entity less than one month later.

In 2020, one friend handed me Emergent Strategy by adrienne maree brown, and another handed me Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. I have been enchanted with both brown and Butler ever since; each has shaped how I think about myself and the world around me.
Yarrow Root Coaching is grounded in the principles of emergent strategy — a way of change that is adaptive, decentralized, and rooted in the belief that small things done with intention can have profound, far-reaching impact.
